The Botanical Gardens in Spearfish Canyon consist of, in general, the area within Savoy comprised of trees, brush, flowers, grasses, etc. There has been a 4 1/2 acre designated “garden” area developed in hopes of encouraging the thousands of yearly visitors of Spearfish Canyon and the local area to always think of the natural habitats that still exist today.
The walking path of the Little Spearfish Falls Trail, which contains signs and information about the various species in the area, is part of the Spearfish Canyon Botanical Gardens. The benches along this trail, as well as the trail of Roughlock Falls, are perfect for taking a break and enjoying the beautiful aspects of nature that can easily be forgotten. There is also an information booth in the grassy area outside the parking lot of the Latchstring Restaurant that can be very helpful when visiting many of the trails in Spearfish Canyon.
The trails designated to make up the Botanical Garden within Spearfish Canyon are the Little Spearfish Falls Trail and Roughlock Falls Trail, however, much of the same vegetation and wildlife can be found throughout all of the trails in Spearfish Canyon including Community Caves, Devil’s Bathtub, Old Baldy Trail, Rim Rock Trail, Little Spearfish Trail, Iron Creek Trail, and Annie Creek Trail. The Little Spearfish Falls Trail and Roughlock Falls Trail are both very easy hikes. Both of these trails will take you to two of the canyon’s amazing waterfalls. The photo opportunities are endless!
