If you are looking for a new trail to hike, Rimrock Trail might be the perfect choice. The trail is located in Spearfish Canyon. The trail head is located in the same area as Little Spearfish Trail. Both are very enjoyable options for a nice day in the canyon! As seen by the colors in the photos that follow, visiting this trail in the Fall is breathtaking, but a visit any time of year will not disappoint.
How do you find Rimrock Trail Head?
From Savoy, take FSR222 and follow it for just under five miles. The trailheads to Rimrock Trail and Little Spearfish Trail are on opposite sides of the road. There are also several access points along the way, including the Dances With Wolves film site location, Timon and Rod and Gun campgrounds, the Old Baldy Trail, an old ranger station/root cellar, and several small marked and unmarked trailheads.
This trail is a fairly moderate hiking trail. It consists of one large loop and two smaller loops. The large loop is just over six miles in length to complete the full loop. The two smaller loops are approximately three or five miles in length. If you were to hike the entire trail system, you will have gone through about a 700 foot elevation change throughout.
Most of the trail is made up of a dirt and rock packed path. Depending on the state of maintenance, the trail is generally a pretty moderate hike. Running, walking, biking, and snow shoeing are all options for this trail.
It would not be uncommon to come across deer, squirrels, and various species of birds. There have been sightings of mountain lions in the area as well so hike with caution. You are shaded by trees for the duration of the hike.
