Do you know that there is a Bald Eagle Viewing Trail located in Spearfish, SD in the Black Hills? This trail is located on Christiansen Drive, just past the Termesphere Gallery, with a parking area on the right hand side of the road. The trail is not an official trail but actually a hunting and logging road. The trail/road eventually meets up with Richmond Hill Road and this road can take you to either Central City or Spearfish Canyon.
If you plan your hike during the right time of day and the right time of the year, you may be lucky enough to see a bald eagle. This is an incredible opportunity unique to trails like this one in the Black Hills. I have heard that the optimal time for seeing eagles is early morning or around sunset. Always be respectful of the animals that may live along a trail, both in the skies and on the ground.
Are you thinking about hiking along the Bald Eagle Viewing Trail?
There are several hills along this trail that you can easily get to the top of and once at the top you will have some pretty spectacular views. If you decide to venture up, keep in mind that you are in the Black Hills and the animals and wildlife in the area is very numerous. Parts of this area can become very dry and rattle snakes have been spotted on this trail. Also, the mountain lion issue in the Black Hills isn’t something that should ever be ignored.
