The Carson Draw Trails have proven to be a very unique hiking destination in the Black Hills. This is one of the few trail systems in the Black Hills that gives you the feeling of being in the back-country. Even with this feeling you remain close in proximity to several towns. They are perfect for day hiking, or, in connection with the Sundance Trail system, you can find opportunity for overnight camping and backpacking.
Where can you find the Carson Draw Trails?
The Carson Draw Trails are located in Wyoming. They are maintained by the Wyoming State Department of Parks and Historic Places. You can find them in a mountainous region of the Black Hills known as the Bearlodge Mountains. Some of the trails and trail heads in this area date back to the 1800s!
If traveling from Spearfish, you will want to hop on I-90 and head west towards Sundance, WY. Take exit 185 and turn right onto US-14 W. In less than a mile you will turn right onto Sundance-Warren Peak Road, then in less than a mile take a left onto Sundance-Miller Creek Road. After a few curves in the road, you will come to a trailhead on the left hand side of the road with a large dirt parking area.
The total length of the Carson Draw Trails is 6.8 miles. The trail includes a loop trail and a couple spur trails off of the loop. This hike is easy to moderate in its difficulty level. Uniquely, this trail system connects to the Sundance Trails. This system contains over 45 miles of hiking trails! The trails consist of easy to difficult hiking. You can even plan overnight stays if you are interested in adding a Black Hills back-country feel to your hiking experience. Another fun hike in this area is Dugout Gulch.
