Community Caves in Spearfish Canyon
Community Caves in Spearfish Canyon

Community Caves is the first big hike within Spearfish Canyon when driving from Spearfish.  A very short hike, but a very vertical hike.  Many people visit this caved area every year and I have even know folks who have camped overnight in the caves.  There is a waterfall that flows through the area year round, however if the water levels are low in the Black Hills this fall can be merely a trickle.  During the winter months this fall freezes and I have seen some incredible photos taken!  Click here to see some for yourself.

Are you hiking to Community Caves?

You can walk around the outside of the caves and gain amazing views of Spearfish Canyon.  If you are a skilled explorer, you may even be able to find a path that will lead you to the area above Community Caves.  This area is very steep, so be warned.  Children should be watched closely and remember the rocks are not always as solid as they seem.  Also, if you go up you have to go back down.  Always remember this when climbing and hiking especially if you decide to explore the top of the caves.

The hike up to the main caves is relatively straight forward, however, what goes up must come down. I have seen adults have to slide down on their bottoms so be aware of this if small children may be tagging along.  If the creek beds are full, you will most likely have to pass through water to get to where you are going.  Bring water, bring a camera, and bring good shoes.

Every time I venture on this hike, I always am amazed at the way Mother Nature does what she does!

    1. Approx. 2 miles into the canyon (from Spearfish) there is a pull-out on the right side of the road. (This is the parking for Skeletal for those that are climbers.) Cross the highway and you will pick up a trail. Follow the trail for a few minutes and look for a cairn on the right side of the trail. This will take you to the creek bed. Walk in a straight line from the cairn and you will spot another cairn (a large peice of driftwood and rocks). Continue walking straight from the wood/rock marker and over the creek bank and you will pick up the trail from there into the woods and straight up the gulch. Its very short but very steep. Trails continue along the cliffs/ridge to the right of the caves (when facing). If you get lost, call me.

  1. I grew up in the Black Hills and had never heard of this spectacular hike..
    Remember use don’t abuse.
