The Deadman Trail system is one of the newest systems in the Black Hills. The non-motorized, single track trail consists of approximately 23 miles of stacked loops. Hikers can travel one loop, or several loops to complete their hiking adventure. This trail system connects to both the Centennial Trail and the 7th Cavalry Trail System to give hikers over 52 miles of hiking trail to explore in the Sturgis area.
Where can I find the trailhead to Deadman Trail?
The northern most part of the trail can be found off of I-90 at exit 32 in Sturgis, SD. You will find trailhead sign with parking on Pineview Drive, just off of Vanocker Canyon Road. Additionally, you can find several other points where you can access the trails along Vanocker Canyon Road. The trails surround Deadman Mountain and exist largely on city owned and forest service owned land and thus give the trail its name.
Starting from the initial trailhead, you can hike about 2 miles on the trail and end up at the Sturgis Dams, alternatively known as the Davenport Dams. These dams were previous water sources to the city of Sturgis. They have historically been off limits to the general public for years and the Deadman Trails now make them accessible. You will find yourself at the Vanocker Trailhead on either side of the road if you travel 2.7 miles south from Bella Joli Winery on Vanocker Canyon Road.
Starting from the Vanocker Trailhead on the east side of the road, you will also end up at the dams. Photos on this page are from this parking area. To the dams the total hiking distance is 2.28 miles one way. Hikers will reach elevations of 4,800 feet. On an average spring day, you most likely will run into all weather types so hike prepared. The trail is largely packed dirt and pine needles. You will hike up over a mountain so initially the hike is very steep, with a steep decline on the second part of the hike. I would rate the over all hiking level of the trail as a moderate hike. Hikers should fill out a registration card at the start of their hike.
