The Willow Creek Loop (Trail #8) is located within the Norbeck Wildlife Preserve. The trailhead is located at the same location as the Willow Creek Horse Camp on Hwy. 244, past Mt. Rushmore National Monument. Other trails that can be found in this part of the Black Hills include Hell Canyon, Black Elk Peak, and Sunday Gulch Trails.
The trail consists of a 2.8 mile loop. The difficulty of the loop is fairly easy throughout, including a shaded area for over half of the hike. A short distance into the hike there is a stream fed waterfall that is a perfect spot to stop for a break. The stream running through this part of the hike is known as Willow Creek. The terrain is mostly dirt, gravel, and grass. The hike is closed to motorized vehicles and open to all other types of outdoor enjoyment, including horseback.
The loop will take approximate 1-2 hours to complete, depending on your speed. About a quarter of the way into the loop, there is a branch from the Willow Creek Loop trail that will take you on the Lost Cabin Trail (Trail #2).
Views of the Norbeck Wildlife Preserve and Black Elk Wilderness are present throughout loop. Additionally, if you take the hike traveling counter clockwise through the loop, you will eventually be able to view the highway and even possibly hear the sounds of a train traveling through the Black Hills.
